HOTEL NICHOLAS Hotel Nicholas Beechworth

Kelly, Sherritt & Byrne reflections

* In the original yard of the hotel grounds were stables and a forge – reputedly the site for the fashioning of Joe Byrne’s armour of the Kelly Gang, by blacksmith Charles Knight.

* Diagonally behind the hotel when it was known as The Railway (and near to the Imperial Hotel’s garden), was the site of the famous bare knuckle fight between Ned Kelly and Isaiah “Wild Wright” on the 8th August 1874.

* In the front bar (of the Railway Hotel), patrons witnessed the historic meeting up of Paddy Byrne and Jack Sherritt, who spoke for the first time in 20 years. Just prior to the siege at Glenrowan in 1880, Jack’s brother Aaron had been murdered by Paddy’s brother Joe Byrne and Dan Kelly.
